World Golf Championships® – Accenture Match Play Championship
Tiger Woods proves again that he is the greatest competitor in the game, taking the Accenture Match Play Championship for the third time in February of 2008. Tiger will defend his title at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, in February 2009.
In February 2009 the Accenture will be permanently located at the luxurious Jack Nicklaus Golf Course at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, on courses designed to challenge these world-renowned golfers, yet so beautiful that one could watch the match simply to be delighted by the beautiful course in the heart of the Sonoran desert.
Tiger Woods has taken the illustrious Championship title on three separate occasions, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Throughout the years other champions have been Henrik Stenson, Geoff Ogilvy, David Toms, Kevin Sutherland, Steve Stricker, Darren Clarke, and Jeff Maggert. The Accenture tournament was founded in 1999 and held in Arizona for the first time in 2007 at the Gallery Club at Dove Mountain.
About Accenture Match Play Championships
The Accenture Match Play Championship is based on a simple premise: bring the best 64 golfers in the world together to compete in the highest prize-money tournament in the world, on the most beautiful and challenging course, with exciting head-to-head match play. Match play is the most traditional form of golf competition; rather than measuring total strokes, match play counts the number of holes won. Paul Runyan, two-time PGA Champion stated, “Stroke Play measures the ability of a golfer, Match Play measures the heart of a competitor.” Put simply, this is spectator golf at its finest.
